The Problem We’re Responding To
The world has become more aware of climate change, the climate crisis, and many of the intersecting issues that make up our crisis of ideologies.
However, as much as young changemakers oppose these dominant ideologies, they continue to be affected, conditioned, and restrained by the same values, paradigms, and processes that reproduce cycles of compression, oppression, and despair in leadership.
We cannot demand change outwardly while remaining bound by the internalised effects of capitalism, neoliberalism, and colonialism. These ways of being don’t sustain people. They don’t help movements multiply. Left unchecked, they reinforce the very patterns of separation and blame we’re trying to move beyond.
We believe: how we build movements is central to the work of change and transformation
Why Dance?
Dance is a liberatory, universal practice — one that anyone, anywhere, can tap into. It offers an accessible way into community and belonging, co-regulating our nervous systems and immersing us in embodied experience rather than purely cognitive ways of engaging.
Long before written language, dance was how our ancestors celebrated, healed, and connected to the sacred. Around the world today, Indigenous communities still use dance and song as living forms of political expression and cultural assertion, offering examples of using movement as visible and somatic resistance.
Dance gives us a language beyond written demands and policy jargon — an expansive, joyful pathway to imagining and embodying the worlds we want to build, together.
What Is Dance4Change?
Dance4Change is a joyful pathway to policymaking — built through mapping, organising, and dancing with young people across the globe.
Big Idea: Young people set the tone for policy processes that shape the worlds we are building for generations to come.
We organise around a shared mission expressed in our Youth Charter, and we channel that mission into letters to policymakers — grounded, specific, and powered by a global community of young people moving together.
How It Works
Policy Pathways Workshops
We meet with partners and participants to understand where they sit in global, regional, national, and local policy landscapes — and find where joy, play, and creativity can add real value to the advocacy work already underway.
Charter Writing & Letter Signing
Inspired by South Africa’s Children’s Rights Charter, our ambassadors and partners have written a charter — an umbrella vision for everything Dance4Change stands for, naming what young people need to feel cared for in society. Partner organisations can contextualise this into their own letters, naming specific targets and policy pathways relevant to their work.
Dancing to Pata Pata
Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata (“Touch Touch”) is at the heart of our gatherings — a song that helps us feel our fundamental interconnectedness and creates the conditions for joy and belonging in every dialogue, event, and gathering we hold.
A world where creating the conditions for young people to thrive is understood as key to the flourishing of the whole planet.
When young people know and remember their own power, they become the bridges that change worlds and shepherd transformation by already living new worlds into being.
For movements to be sustainable, they must reflect and practice the worlds they wish to see now. Justice is something we practice, rather than something that is handed to us.
Elders — Policy Collaboration alongside Research & Evaluation ~ Established organisations with deep experience in research, policy advocacy, and campaigning on wellbeing, mental health, education, and flourishing — help us understand the terrain and find our entry points.
Leaders & Champions — Youth Organisations ~ Youth-led and youth-serving organisations charting the path forward with us — invested in the narrative of young people’s resilience, wellbeing, and flourishing in the climate space.
In one year, we aim to:
- Identify the governments paving the way for policies like these to be enacted
- Build a network of policy “elders” offering insight — as opposed to leading the network
- Establish youth organisations as our leading youth council
- Map energy and momentum across regions
- Cultivate a tight, connected network working toward young people’s flourishing worldwide
In three years, we aim for:
- Young people’s involvement in world-building to be treated as essential, not an afterthought
- The pathways young people create to shape policy as valued and documented
- Regional blocs to prioritise young people’s wellbeing as a foundational policy value
- Dance4Change to be recognised as a legitimate means for young people to engage in policy
Our 10-year target:
- 1,000 youth organisations supported in building joyful pathways to policymaking
- 100 countries recognising and ratifying a charter for the care of young people
- Community-led, joyful pathways research recognised by policymakers as vital data
